Dragoumi Street, Athens 16121, Greece e-mail: christinaantoniougr@ yahoo.com The increase of air pollution over the years has major effects on the human skin. The skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and environmental air pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxides, particulate matter (PM), ozone (O3), and cigarette smoke. Although human skin acts as a biological shield against pro-oxidative chemical and physical air pollutants, the prolonged or repetitive exposure to high levels of these pollutants may have profound negative effects on the skin. Exposure of the skin to air pollutants has been associated with skin aging and inflammatory or allergic skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or acne, while skin cancer is among the most serious effects. On the other hand, some air pollutants (i.e., O3, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide) and scattering particulates (clouds and soot) in the troposphere reduce the effects of shorter wavelength UVR and significant reductions in UV irradiance have been observed in polluted urban areas.

Epidemiological evidence that indoor air pollution from cooking with solid fuels accelerates skin aging in Chinese women.

BACKGROUND Recently, we showed that outdoor air pollution exposure from traffic and industry is associated with an increased risk of skin aging in Caucasian women. In China, indoor air pollution exposure caused by the use of solid fuels like coal is a major health problem and might also increase the risk of skin aging in Chinese women. OBJECTIVE As cooking with solid fuels is a major source o...

Air pollution, UV irradiation and skin carcinogenesis: what we know, where we stand and what is likely to happen in the future?

The link between air pollution, UV irradiation and skin carcinogenesis has been demonstrated within a large number of epidemiological studies. Many have shown the detrimental effect that UV irradiation can have on human health as well as the long-term damage which can result from air pollution, the European ESCAPE project being a notable example. In total, at present around 2800 different chemi...

Environmental influences on skin aging and ethnic-specific manifestations

Skin aging does not only occur by passing time alone but also by the exposure to different environmental factors. The skin aging process, which is induced by environmental factors, is named premature or extrinsic skin aging process and can be distinguished from the chronologically (intrinsic) skin aging process by characteristic skin aging signs. Well known environmental factors leading to extr...

Biochemical changes of Conocarpus erectus (combretaceae) in response to gas refinery air pollution as an air pollution indicator

Environmental pollution consists of different types of pollutants in air, soil, and water. Due to the fact that plants can respond to environmental pollution, they can be used as bio-indicators for environmental monitoring. Air pollution in areas with oil and gas refineries nearby is an important problem. This study aims to survey the effects of gas refinery air pollutants on Conocarpus erectus...

Tourism Impact on Air Pollution in Developed and Developing Countries

T he main purpose of this paper is to investigate and compare the impact of tourism on air pollution in selected developed and developing countries during the period of 1995-2014. To this end, at first, the model was designed based on the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) assumptions and with the presence of the major influencing factors on air pollution along with the international ...
